Part of the fun of fan-fiction is to work out the lore which your author has written down, and to work within that, to a degree even the original author might be proud. Or - as what I did with "Cult of the Singing Flame" - to such a degree as to annoy him.
Consider that Hard Science Fiction is fan fiction where the lore was set down by G-d On High.
Or by Newton, Lagrange, and Tsiolkovsky. Next best thing. As Alexander Pope noted.
