I was checking out the latest on Classic Maya history, with a focus on the Hiatus in the middle AD 500s / 9.5's. Some gaps have been filled-in on the career of the Snake Kingdom (Kaanu'l); here, with a look at Chochkitam.
We learn that Kaanu'l was Dzibanche... at first. Kaanu'l became an empire, or a "hegemony" anyway which means the same to me, over the 9.5's. They moved their base to Chochkitam and that is when - 562/9.6.8 - ahau K'ahk’ Ti’ Ch'ich’ (famously) defeated the rival empire at Yax Mutal, now "Tikal". Well sort-of famously; people used to think Jom Uhut Chan "Sky Witness" won this, but Sky Witness was "just" the heir-apparent.
Chi'k Nab / Huxte’ Tuun - "Calakmul" - was part of the serpentine empire. But it wouldn't become the royal seat until the late AD 630s / 9.10's.
