A tiny continent

It had been noted for some time that Tal'Dorei, the first Vox Machina stamping-ground, is about the side of Malagasy and, further, might not get you the climate-range it promises.

One solution I'd seen was to impose an elevation-gradient upon the continent, such that the frigid north is not just north but also higher. That solution is what we'd call "a hack", because the north also may have glaciers which have a nasty way of scraping the ground beneath them to sealevel. We're back to the rain on Mongo. I'd not like to impose this upon most fantasy worlds.

I then got a sinking feeling about Taladas. It already looks a bit, er, squarish...

The Time of the Dragon box has two Taladas maps, a west side and an east side. The west map offers a scale on its lower left, going to 320 miles. Measuring that, the scale is a neat 8 inches long - and checkerboarded! - such that each inch represents 40 miles. There's no real longitude / latitude marked here; but to be safe, we start by measuring this continent north/south.

Taladas is 28 inches on the map: 1120 miles north/south. That's about New Orleans to Minneapolis.

East/west the continent stretches a little longer - on the map. The southern edge, Syldar and Neron, are implied to be rainforest and tropical; so it would be dangerous to set them north of New Orleans' 30 degrees latitude.

This "continent" is about the size of the province Western Australia. Both cover about a million square miles. Bit more than Greenland.

For climate, Rudil should be about like San Francisco. The Northern Hosk should mostly resemble Missouri at its west coast, inland like Oklahoma and Kansas or even western Colorado. The Lower Panak should be like Nebraska. There's a colder Upper Panak which is up an escarpment and exposed to the north wind.

But I cannot get Upper Panak more arctic than Idaho. Likewise the "jungles" down south resemble more southern Mississippi than the Amazon - so, expect winters. And the Otherlands map of the world is a joke for north of the equator.

UPDATE 5/16: How to expand it and how I expand it.

There's talk of at least two more continents besides Ansalon and Taladas (and antarctic Icereach, which we get in Otherlands): Adlatum and Ithin'carthia. Again, though - what they for, especially Adlatum? why should the epic need it? We know what Taladas is for.
