How come modern-humans didn't get to Europe earlier than they did (late 40k's BC), is a question. This looks important: the Neronian.
Argued here is that some modern humans came up with the "Neronian" - after the cave not the emperor - culture late 50k's BC. They lasted in Mandrin - France not China - for a few millennia. Until, like, 49.8 kBC when they left and got replaced by Neanders again.
The Rhône / Riviera is remote from the Nile Valley and Levant on the one side, and from Morocco on the other, both (I think) modern-human by then. No boats. So I'm guessing they didn't have genetic diversity, even compared with the not exactly exogamous Neanders. Plus: no Solutrean toolkit let alone agriculture.
